Top Tip: Check for anti-goals!
By Ellen O’Hara
Have you ever wondered why you find it so hard to reach certain goals that you have set for your business or your practice? Maybe it’s because you’ve set your sights too high. Or maybe it’s because they are anti-goals.
Anti-goals are those things we set out to do because someone else said we should, because we feel it’s expected of us or because everyone else is doing it. But what’s right for one person may not be right for you.
At best, anti-goals distract us away from what we really want. At worst, they can undermine our confidence and sabotage our success. So next time you are goal setting, ask yourself three questions:
Is this goal really in line with my true values and the way I want to do things?
Will this goal help me to achieve my longer term vision?
Do I feel motivated by the consequences of achieving this goal?
If answer to any of these questions is ‘No’, maybe it’s for a re-think!
Combine this exercise with SMART Goal Setting to set more effective goals.
This and other exercises form part of Cockpit Arts’ Creating an Outline Business Plan workshop series as part of the Making It workshops and seminars programme.
